Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a holistic medical system that has been practiced in Asia for more than 3000 years. TCM uses a unique whole body approach to health care. It aims to identify the root cause of symptoms and disease and treat the overall body pattern. For this reason, TCM can be effectively applied to treat a wide variety of health concerns. The practitioner assesses their patient during an in-depth consultation and determines where the imbalance in the body’s organs and meridian system is originating, then uses the appropriate therapeutic modality (see list below) to restore the balance.

Very fine disposable needles are inserted into specific points in the body that connect to pathways (meridians) of energy in the body that regulate physical, mental, and emotional balance. Does it hurt? No, the needles are ultra thin and most people experience no or minimal discomfort; in fact, most people find it deeply relaxing and enjoyable. The World Health Organization of the United Nations has compiled a list of some of the conditions in Western medical terms for which acupuncture is known to be effective. To see it click here.

Pain Management & Mobility Acupuncture Program

Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to relieve all kinds of pain with great results. Our Lotus House Acupuncturists have all done extra training in a special style of acupuncture specific for treating pain. After a one-on-one session including your initial treatment, your Acupuncturist will tailor a pain management treatment program for you which may include: community acupuncture or regular acupuncture sessions, cupping, Chinese herbal medicines specific for pain, topical liniments, and we refer to appropriate practitioners when needed.

The style of acupuncture we use in our Pain Management & Mobility program usually does not needle the pain site directly which makes this treatment very compatible with any other therapeutic modality you may already be using such as: Massage therapy, Physiotherapy, Osteopathy, Myofacial release, OrthoBionomy or Chiropractics. What we have found in the years we’ve been using this style of acupuncture is that it often enhances the treatments you receive from your other practitioners. Acupuncture works to clear the pathways within muscle, tendons and bone that are causing you pain, and helps ‘clear’ an area reinforcing the work of another modality or helping make your next adjustment, massage, release or manipulation easier and more effective. We do not recommend scheduling appointments on the same day, ask let your Acupuncturist know if you are already working with another modality and they will advise you on how to space out the scheduling of your appointments. We have also found the specific style of acupuncture we use (which is also traditional) more effective than the local style acupuncture more commonly practised in the treatment of pain. We will use the local style when necessary, appropriate or if it is what you and your body respond to best!

For the best and fastest results we recommend acupuncture sessions initially scheduled closer together and then spaced out for maintenance once pain relief has been achieved. Resolution of acute pain is often achieved quickly, but every body and cause of pain is different and can respond differently. Patients with chronic pain also respond very well but often need a maintenance session scheduled according to how long they go pain free or with reduced pain.

Make an empowering choice with your health and take a step toward not living with pain! If you have any questions about how or if acupuncture can help your pain, please call us at 604-885-9527 and ask to speak to one of our Registered Acupuncture professionals.

Acutonics is a non-invasive system of sound healing that incorporates sound and vibration to stimulate and balance the human energy field. It is similar to acupuncture but without needles. Calibrated tuning forks are applied to specific acupuncture points of the body to access the body's meridian systems. These tuning forks may be used on their own or in conjunction with acupuncture needles to effectively treat a wide variety of health conditions.

Tuina (pronounced ‘twee-na’) is the Traditional Chinese Medicine style of massage which involves vigourous stimulation of acupoints and areas of the body. When appropriate, this massage is incorporated with other modalities such as cupping.

Diet & lifestyle

Your diet and the nature of your food can play an important role in bringing your body back into good health. Dietary advice is based on the energetic properties of food (eg - warming or cooling) and needs to balance with the patient's constitution and the season. Additional lifestyle suggestions may be introduced.
